How it all started
A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. The journey of the Gavel Club of UoM began on 2nd of May 2005 with many hopes and dreams. The club set in motion with the generous sponsorship of the first ever Sri Lankan Distinguished Toastmaster Lalith Kahatapitiya, the Chairman of KIK Group of Companies, and with the support of IESL Toastmasters Club.
The first president of the club was Charaka Senanayake and the vice presidents were Melinda Yasaranji, Chamath Jayaweera, and Waruna Samarawickrama. The club grew in leaps and bounds over the years and is now considered to be the best Gavel Club in the country.
Following the guidelines of TM International, the club recommends its members to follow and complete the CC manual, which is an internationally accepted step wise guideline for public speaking. The club has produced many winning speakers throughout its journey, including All Island Best Speaker and Inter University Best Speaker.
Breaking the boundaries of Public Speaking, yet adhering to the guidelines of Toastmasters International, the club started taking steps towards enhancing the leadership skills of its members. The CL manual, which is an internationally accepted manual for leadership, was introduced to club members as a result.
The story of the club’s journey is full of bright landmarks such as producing the global runners-up of CIMA GBC and successful performance in many other competitions, regarding which we are humbly proud of.
